1 Dream and Our Wish Upon a Star

My day was exhausting. Very little seemed to be going the way I wanted it to. Here it was only seven months from my wedding and I had yet to make a final decision on where to have it let alone select the invitations, printer, menu, florist … I could go on and on but even that wears me out. I was, am, so good and comfortable organizing events for other people as well as for organizations, but it seems that when it comes to my the most important day of my life as yet I am stuck in the trappings of what I call wedding quick sand.

I got home, changed, made myself a good strong cup of tea, and then plopped down on my bed with the brochures for possible locations, caterers, and florists. Everyone had advised me to hire a wedding planner … let them deal with the stress, after all that was what they did. My response was generic, “I plan events for a living. I have all the experience and savvy I need to arrange my wedding and make it spectacular.” Who would know better as to the what and how I wanted things done – the undoubtedly typical rhetorical answer from a know-it-all. The more fool me, and anyone who thinks like me when it comes to planning their own wedding.

My eyes and head got so tired I must have dozed off and drifted into fantasy-land. All of a sudden, I was at some untold celebrity’s wedding. I somehow drifted – unnoticed – by a group of rather intimidating well-dressed security men and into a beautifully floraled entrance way that lead into a reception area. It was oval shaped and the entire room was designed with double beveled glass doors each of which was separated by about three feet of light mahogany wood paneling around the entire room. The doors were slightly open and gossamer fabric curtains were flowing with the breeze. It was April, the weather was ideal, and the landscaped garden was picture perfect with cherry blossoms. I was not ready to wake up just yet.

Suddenly we were outside and I was watching all the famous and some infamous guests seating themselves for the ceremony. The seats were not your normal chairs … they were simple but very elegant love-seats. So whether you were a couple or solo, you were comfortable and “together.” (In my sleeping mind, I was praying that I would remember enough to bring back to reality with me.) The music started and it was grand. The bride and groom had a friend personalize the traditional “walking down the aisle” piece, and it was like listening to a 21st century Broadway musical rendition composed by Chopin. It’s the only way I can describe it.

After a few initial notes were played, the groom stood up from one of the love seats and walked onto an elevated almost petal shaped – platform that was carved out of a huge piece of light colored sandstone. Once he was standing, the pianist went into full play and then you could see the bride`s reflection as she started walking down a curved marble stairway towards the open doors, the ceremonial altar, and her future. Wake up now … not a chance.

When she came out into the radiant sunset, it was as if everything around her stood still. Her dress glistened, her tiara sparkled playful shadows onto her face, and she looked like Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty all wrapped up in one woman. She reached the platform, stepped onto it and took the groom’s hands in hers as they turned to face the Chaplin. They read their vows, looked at each and smiled, and they were one. Their wedding was one for the story books: one night of dreams: one lifetime together forever.

I started to wake up and scrambled for a pen and some paper. No way that dream was going to leave my memory … I was going to turn fantasy my ideal into as much of a reality as I could. I was no celebrity, but I sure was going to make our wedding day a celebration for Sealy (my husband-to-be), myself, and family and friends. Our star is out there; my wish is on it; and we will make our dreams come true.
